Caring for Children
Southside Elementary School
Last year, our school received a visit from staff from John Brown University. This is a small University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas that has been connecting with Ireland and Belfast in particular for about 20 years for study abroad opportunities. During this visit we were able to develop links with a school in the United States of America. Last year, P6 O'Hanlon collaborated with a class in Southside Elementary School in a number of projects to teach the children about other cultures and about how to become global citizens. The children began by researching each others respective countries, exploring things such as population size, weather, culture, traditions, money, food, languages, landmarks and daily life. The children asked each other questions about school life, routines, traditions and festivals which they answered by recording and sending video messages. The class in America had a lot of native Spanish speakers so we decided to use this as an opportunity to facilitate language exchange to improve the language learning of both classes.
