Belvoir Forest
As summer turned to autumn, we started to think about how the environment around us begins to change and the signs of autumn become evident in the changing weather, daylight hours and leaves on the trees. As we explored our local area as part of our 'Where I Live' topic, we travelled across Belfast to Belvoir Forest. On our way there we looked at the city centre, Queen's University, Harland and Wolff cranes and George Best airport. We noticed how many cranes there were on building sites in the city and wondered what was being constructed.
In Belvoir Forest we had two forest rangers who took us on an adventure to explore who lives in the forest, the footprints of visitors and how the leaves on trees were turning from green to orange, yellow, red and brown. We loved foraging for twigs, sticks and leaves to make a home for a hedgehog before winter sets in. Taking inspiration from our focus artist, Andy Goldsworthy, we created a collage of natural materials, identifying a rainbow of colours deposited around the forest.
We completed our day out with a picnic and, of course, a trip to the park!
