Special Educational Needs (SEN) Provision at Glenwood

At Glenwood Primary School, we are committed to providing a nurturing, inclusive environment where every child feels valued, supported, and inspired to achieve their full potential. In line with our vision and values of kindness, respect, resilience, teamwork, curiosity and commitment, we ensure that children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) are given the support they need to thrive both academically and personally.

Our Specialist Provision:

  • Specialist Provision in Mainstream (SPiM) Classes
We currently have five SPiM classes (The Nest, The Burrow, The Hive, The Den and The Pond) which provide targeted support for pupils with a range of additional needs. These classes allow children to benefit from a structured learning environment while remaining part of the mainstream school wherever possible. Our highly trained staff work closely with each pupil to develop Personal Learning  Plans, ensuring that support is personalised to their unique strengths and challenges.

  • Nurture Class – The Lighthouse
Our Key Stage 1 Nurture Class supports younger pupils who may need extra help settling into school or developing essential social, emotional, and learning skills. The class focuses on creating a safe, calm, and nurturing environment where children can build confidence, form positive relationships, and develop the skills needed to access the broader curriculum.

Our Approach

  • Early Identification: We use assessment and teacher observations to identify needs quickly, ensuring timely support.

  • Tailored Support: We provide differentiated teaching, additional resources, and evidence-based interventions (such as Nessy and Talk Boost KS1) to meet individual learning needs.

  • In-School Support Teachers: Underachieving pupils and those with specific needs receive regular, targeted support from our in-school support team.

  • Partnerships: As SENcos, we work closely with parents, teachers and external agencies to create joined-up support for every child.

  • Inclusive Classrooms: All children are supported through scaffolding, flexible grouping, and multi-sensory approaches that ensure equal access to the curriculum.

Supporting Every Learner

We recognise that SEN provision is not one-size-fits-all. Support may include:

  • Individual or small-group intervention programmes.

  • Adapted resources, technology, or learning materials.

  • Personalised targets as part of Personal Learning Plans (PLPs).

  • Emotional and social support to build confidence and resilience.

Gifted and Talented Pupils

We also extend provision to challenge pupils working at greater depth by providing enrichment opportunities such as debating, writing competitions, reading clubs, and literacy leadership roles.

Our Commitment

At Glenwood, we believe every child has a voice and a story to tell. By working in partnership with families, we ensure that children with SEN are not only included but celebrated as part of our school community.

Our SENco is Mrs Leith and our Assistant SENco is Miss Heaney.
